Body Mass Index
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It’s a simple calculation used to assess whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.
The healthy range is between 18 to 25.
Excess body weight refers to the amount of weight above your healthy range (BMI 25).
The amount of weight loss can be expressed using EWL or TWL:
— EWL: Excessive Weight Loss — the ratio of weight loss to your excess body weight.
— TWL: Total Weight Loss — the ratio of weight loss to your total body weight.
Expected Weight Loss
We use the term “Excess Weight Loss (EWL)” to predict expected weight loss after surgery.
EWL Calculations
Example
Your current weight is 100 kg.
Your height is 160 cm.
Then your BMI is 39.
Your healthy weight should be 64 kg (BMI 25) or below.
Your excess weight is 36 kg.
