Body Mass Index

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It’s a simple calculation used to assess whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height.

The healthy range is between 18 to 25.

Excess body weight refers to the amount of weight above your healthy range (BMI 25).

The amount of weight loss can be expressed using EWL or TWL:

EWL: Excessive Weight Loss — the ratio of weight loss to your excess body weight.
TWL: Total Weight Loss — the ratio of weight loss to your total body weight.

Expected Weight Loss

We use the term “Excess Weight Loss (EWL)” to predict expected weight loss after surgery.

Most patients after sleeve gastrectomy are expected to lose at least 60% of their excess weight after 12 months. It is also possible to achieve 80% or even 100% or more in some patients.
The average excess weight loss after gastric bypass is around 70–80%, and it is possible to achieve 100% or more in some patients.
EWL Calculations
60% Excess weight loss = Excess weight × 60%
80% Excess weight loss = Excess weight × 80%
100% Excess weight loss = Excess weight

Example

Your current weight is 100 kg.
Your height is 160 cm.
Then your BMI is 39.
Your healthy weight should be 64 kg (BMI 25) or below.
Your excess weight is 36 kg.
If you lose 30 kg after surgery, then:

Your excessive weight loss is: 30 / 36 = 83%
Your total weight loss is: 30 / 100 = 30

Formula:

BMI =
Weight (kg)
Height (m)2

Example:

If you weight 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall:

BMI =
70
1.752
=
70
3.06
≈ 22.9
